PETER’S DENIAL

TOPIC: PETER’S DENIAL – FROM FAILURE TO PURPOSE
TEXT: Luke 22:54-62, John 21:15-17

FIRST SERMON:
WAS PETER’S DENIAL OF JESUS FROM GOD?

The answer is: It was FOREKNOWN by God, but it was NOT APPROVED by God as “right”.

Teaching:

  1. It was not right, it was human weakness
Peter denied Jesus out of fear, not obedience.
Jesus said in Matthew 26:34 — “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”
Peter did it because he was afraid of being arrested and killed like Jesus. It was a wrong action driven by fear.
  2. God knew it would happen — but God did not force him
God is all-knowing. Jesus knew Peter would deny Him. That is foreknowledge, not approval.

Just like God knows we will sin, but He does not make us sin. Peter had a free will.

  1. God allowed it for a greater purpose
    Why did God allow it?

a) To fulfill prophecy and show Jesus is truly the Messiah who knows all things.

b) To break Peter’s pride. Before, Peter said “Even if all forsake you, I will never forsake you” (Matthew 26:33). The denial humbled him.

c) To show grace and restoration. After resurrection, Jesus restored Peter in John 21:15-17 — “Do you love me? Feed my sheep.” It teaches that even when we fail, God can still use us.

“Peter’s Denial of Christ: Human Failure Within Divine Foreknowledge”
Or for church: “Why Peter Denied Jesus — And How God Turned His Failure Into Purpose”

Summary for preaching:
Peter’s denial was wrong in man’s action, but used by God for a right purpose — to teach humility, forgiveness, and restoration. It was not that God told Peter to deny Jesus, but God used Peter’s mistake to build a stronger Apostle.

✍️✍️SECOND SERMON:

INTRODUCTION:
Everybody knows Peter as the bold Apostle. But one night, this same bold man denied Jesus 3 times. The question many ask: Was it God’s plan? Did God make Peter deny Jesus?

No. God did not force Peter to sin. God knew it would happen and God used it to teach us that God can restore any fallen man.

  1. THE PRIDE BEFORE THE FALL (Matthew 26:33-35)

Peter said, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”

His problem was overconfidence. He trusted his own strength more than God’s grace.

Lesson: Many of us deny Jesus not with mouth, but with our lifestyle when we think we are too strong to fall. Pride makes us vulnerable.

  1. THE PRESSURE THAT CAUSED THE FALL (Luke 22:55-60)

Peter was in the wrong place — sitting with the enemies around the fire, far from Jesus. Then fear came:

  • A servant girl said “You were with Him” — He said “I don’t know Him”
  • Second time — “I am not”
  • Third time — He began to curse and swear.

Fear of what people will say can make you deny your faith, your calling, your identity.

Lesson: If you stay in the company of mockers when your faith is tested, you will fall.

  1. THE PURPOSE GOD BROUGHT OUT OF THE FALL (Luke 22:61-62, John 21:15-17)

The Bible says “The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter… and Peter went outside and wept bitterly.”

That look was not condemnation, it was love and restoration.

After resurrection, Jesus did not reject Peter. He restored him 3 times:
“Peter, do you love me? Feed my sheep.”

Why God allowed it:

  • To humble Peter — The rock needed to be broken before God could build the Church on him.
  • To teach us grace — Failure is not final. God restores.
  • To make Peter a better pastor — A man who has failed understands how to forgive others who fail.

CONCLUSION:
Peter’s denial was WRONG in action, but RIGHT in God’s ability to use it for a greater purpose. It was foreknown by God, not forced by God.

You may have denied Jesus before through fear, sin, or compromise. Like Peter, Jesus is looking at you tonight not to condemn you, but to restore you.

ALTAR CALL PRAYER:
“Lord Jesus, like Peter I have failed you. Forgive my pride and fear. Restore me today and use my life again for your glory.”

Short declarations for the end:

  1. My failure will not be my final chapter.
  2. God will turn my denial into testimony.
